The science predicted all of this. The science also predicts what comes next if we don't change. The question for the UK is not whether climate change is real or whether human activity is driving it. Those questions were settled decades ago. The question is whether we're going to start treating climate science as the operating manual it actually is.

Why It's Politically Hard

Three reasons the science-policy gap persists, worth understanding:

1. Concentrated Beneficiaries, Diffuse Costs

The industries that benefit from continued fossil fuel investment are concentrated, well-resourced and politically organised. The costs of continued emissions are diffuse, distributed across millions of households over decades. Political systems weight concentrated voices more heavily than diffuse ones, even when the diffuse voices represent the larger group.

2. Time Horizons

Climate damage builds across decades. Electoral cycles run on shorter intervals. The mismatch creates a structural bias toward decisions whose costs appear after the next election.

3. The Honest Conversation Hasn't Happened

Climate transition involves real trade-offs: stranded assets, regional employment shifts, increased energy bills during transition periods, infrastructure investment. The political class on most sides has been reluctant to discuss these trade-offs honestly, preferring vague commitments that don't require explaining anything difficult to voters.

The honest conversation, "this is what we need to do, this is what it will cost, this is how we're going to share the cost fairly," has been largely absent from UK climate politics. Its absence is the deepest reason the trajectory hasn't shifted faster.

What "Listening to the Science" Would Actually Look Like

Six policy actions consistent with the science as currently understood:

  1. End new oil and gas licensing. The IPCC has been clear: no new fossil fuel infrastructure is consistent with 1.5°C alignment.
  2. Phase out remaining fossil fuel subsidies and tax reliefs. Public money currently working against the stated target. The accounting case is obvious; the political case is harder.
  3. Accelerate grid, storage and transmission investment. The technology is mature; the limitation is build pace and planning consent.
  4. Mandate emissions reduction across major sectors. Transport, buildings, industry, agriculture. Carrots haven't been sufficient; sticks need to be added.
  5. Climate-aligned public procurement. Government spending is one of the largest market levers in any economy. Aligned procurement shifts entire supply chains.
  6. Honest transition funding. Direct support for affected workers and regions during the transition. The fair transition is the politically sustainable transition.

None of this is radical. Most of it is recommended by the Climate Change Committee, the Office for Budget Responsibility, and the various scientific advisory bodies. The recommendations have been made. The implementation has lagged.

What Households Can Do

Climate policy is the main game. Household action is the smaller game. But the smaller game has real influence on the main game, through political signal, market signal, and cultural normalisation. Five household-level actions worth doing:

  1. Vote informed. General and local elections determine the policy trajectory. Vote based on the actual policy positions, not the marketing.
  2. Reduce household emissions. Insulation, heat pumps, electric vehicles, electric appliances, solar where viable. Each household action contributes to the cultural normalisation of the transition.
  3. Reduce consumption. The disposable economy has its own significant emissions footprint. Reuse and reduction reduce demand for emissions-intensive production.
  4. Support companies with credible commitments. B Corp certification, peer-reviewed LCAs, transparent reporting. Buy from companies whose climate practice is verified, not claimed.
  5. Engage civic life. Contact MPs on specific climate policy. Support advocacy organisations. Show up at community discussions. Climate policy is shaped by sustained civic pressure.
